History of Crete, by Theocharis Detorakis

A book that has been described as "the best history of Crete" and gives a clear and full account of the history and culture of the island, from Neolithic times right up to the Nazi invasion and the legendary battle of Crete. Written in a plain and simple style and as a continuous narrative without chrononological gaps, the History is a synthesis of the vast international bibliography that has grown up around the field of Cretan studies.

Theocharis Detorakis is Professor of Byzantine Philology at the University of Crete. His love for his home island led him early in his career to focus his academic work on it's complex and eventful history. He is a well known authority on Crete and has published extensively on subjects ranging from the island's history and literature to its language and folklore. He has been awarded the "Nikos Kazantzakis" Award and the title (office) of "Archon Megas Protonotarios by the Holy and Great Church" by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople.
