The church of Our Lady of Kritsa was one of the first Christian monuments to be studied in depth. It is probably the best-known Christian monument in Crete. Its painted decoration, corresponding to four different periods of Byzantine art and its size render the church very distinctive for both the expert and the visitor. This guide is intended for the general public, unfamiliar with Byzantine art, its styles and iconography, and the secondary episodes or even main subjects of its narrative scenes.
